  {"id":239,"date":"2021-07-02T14:09:31","date_gmt":"2021-07-02T19:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/lgbt-policy-lab\/?page_id=239"},"modified":"2026-02-02T13:59:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T19:59:47","slug":"small-grant-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/lgbtq-policy-lab\/small-grant-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Grants Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥<\/h2>\n<p>The LGBTQ+ Policy Lab oversees a Small Grants Program ($500 &#8211; $1,500) which helps to cover expenses related to carrying out research on LGBTQ+ policies and populations, broadly defined.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Small Grant Program is contingent upon available funds and is\u00a0<strong>not currently seeking proposals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>All Vanderbilt faculty (regardless of tenure track status), postdoctoral scholars, graduate\/professional students, and undergraduate students are eligible to apply.<\/li>\n<li>Preference will be given to students, postdocs, and individuals without access to other sources of support.<\/li>\n<li>Proposals must address a question of relevance to LGBTQ+-related public policies (e.g. marriage equality, the transgender military ban, bathroom bills, employment\/public accommodations non-discrimination, religious freedom laws, adoption policies, hate crime laws, HIV-related policies, and others.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>FAQ<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Q:<\/strong> Do proposals have to address an existing policy?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Proposals are also suitable if they address issues of potential policy relevance to LGBTQ+ populations even if they do not directly evaluate an existing policy (though policy implications should be discussed).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q:<\/strong> Are there methodological or topical requirements?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Research can be qualitative or quantitative and can come from any school or discipline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q:<\/strong> Do students proposals differ from post-doctoral or faculty proposals?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Proposals from students must include a faculty sponsor who can verify the legitimacy of the proposed research project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q:<\/strong> What type of expenses can the funding cover?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Funds can be used for a range of expenses, including: transcription services (e.g., to transcribe interviews); performing a short survey; or hiring research assistants (e.g., to code state-level statutes or newspaper headlines). Funds cannot be used for PI salary. All use of funds must conform to all ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ policies, including payments to research subjects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q:<\/strong> What are the expectations of those who receive a grant?<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> Within six months of receiving the grant, the recipient must submit a one page report on the status of the project. Recipients also agree to deliver a 10-15 minute presentation about the research to the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Application<\/h2>\n<p>Proposals are limited to two pages of text (single spaced and 12 point font), including references, and must include the following sections:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rationale for the project and its connection with LGBTQ+ policies and\/or populations<\/li>\n<li>Research question (and specific hypotheses to be tested if examining an existing policy)<\/li>\n<li>Description of the analytical strategy\/methods<\/li>\n<li>Itemized budget<\/li>\n<li>Plan and timeline for the project<\/li>\n<li>(Student\/postdoc applicants only) Name and contact information of a faculty sponsor who agrees to supervise the project<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Proposals should be emailed to Kitt Carpenter, Director of the ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ LGBTQ+ Policy Lab, at <a href=\"mailto:christopher.s.carpenter@vanderbilt.edu\"><em>christopher.s.carpenter@vanderbilt.edu<\/em><\/a> and will be reviewed by LGBTQ+ Policy Lab Faculty. Questions about the program can also be directed to Prof. Carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>Expenses incurred by VUMC students\/faculty\/staff will be reimbursed via ESA or NSBA. Information can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/strategicplan\/trans-institutional-programs\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIPS website<\/a>.
